SIMPLE PUNISHMENT
When we think of slave punishments we often consider slaves hung up being whipped, or tied to “flogging horses” to be caned or strapped. And indeed on large plantations and in the mines, quarries and factories where there are many slaves this is often the case – the more so because other slaves are lined up to watch to remind them of what awaits them if they are disobedient.
We should not forget though that there are many small farms and small-holdings where an owner owns a single slave to do all the rough work, and from time to time that slave will need punishment, too. There’s then no hanging frame or flogging horse – the salve is simply ordered into the house, ordered to strip (on smallholdings slaves are often allowed shorts so that they can serve passers by with “farm gate” produce if the owner is busy), then told to lie on the kitchen table to take his punishment.
